Behind the Bench

Ella Pope Kerner is a jewelry artist from Boston, Massachusetts. Growing up jumping through the waves along New England’s rocky beaches, she finds joy and inspiration in her curiosity of the world around her. She enjoys asking questions, even the unanswerable ones, of herself and others, as she is driven by a desire to understand.

Ella’s work speaks to and for sentient beings. Throughout her ideation process, Ella challenges the emotional part of herself to create thoughtful works that speak for the human experience. Her designs are deeply conceptual, but aesthetically simple. She finds beauty in large smooth forms with small, sometimes hidden, details that keep the wearer engaged in the work. Ella designs for both the body and the gallery, as she defines her jewelry as “wearable sculpture”. She builds her work by hand because she is mesmerized by the process and tied to the labor that goes into each handcrafted piece.

When she is not in the studio, Ella enjoys spending time with her family and friends, her dog, reading, swimming and finding cameos for her ever-growing collection.
